When Can I Start Driveway Sealcoating?
Sealcoating helps protect your asphalt driveway from UV rays, rain, snow, sleet, and automobile fluids. We recommend you apply asphalt sealer every 2 to 3 years to give your driveway that rich black color it had when it was first installed. Once the snow melts, our driveway contractors will be flooded with calls for asphalt sealcoating. When we can start sealcoating will depend on the weather and ground temperature.
Why is sealcoating important?
Sealcoating prevents most cracks and potholes so you can enjoy your asphalt driveway for as long as possible. Otherwise, you would have to pay for asphalt repair to keep your driveway functional and looking nice. Many of our customers appreciate how sealcoating makes their driveways look brand new. If you are planning to sell your home, a coat of driveway sealer can greatly boost curb appeal.
Benefits of driveway sealcoating:
- Stops asphalt from drying out and deteriorating
- Blocks UV rays that fade asphalt
- Forms a hard barrier so automotive fluids don’t soften asphalt
- Restores the rich black color of asphalt
- Fills small voids in pavement so it looks even
How long does it take asphalt sealer to cure?
Even the best driveway sealer needs enough time to cure in order to work properly. Before you schedule asphalt sealcoating, we recommend checking your local forecast. Warm weather and clear skies help your driveway cure faster so it can be reopened to traffic within 24 hours. takes longer to cure when the weather is cool and the skies cloudy.
What temperatures are best for sealcoating?
We wait to sealcoat until the temperature is at least 50 degrees (and rising). Since sealcoating needs dry conditions to cure, we also wait until the humidity is less than 50%. Check the weather forecast ahead of time to make sure there’s little to no chance of rain. After sealcoating, your driveway will need to stay dry for at least half a day.
If the weather is still too cold to start sealcoating, call our asphalt contractors anyways. We offer infrared asphalt repair for cracks and potholes that can be done year-round. Keep in mind that you will need to repair any asphalt damage before sealcoating anyways.
What months are best for sealcoating?
In Michigan, the sealcoating season lasts from May to September. Keep in mind that we may be able to sealcoat outside of this timeframe depending on the weather. Since the sealcoating season is shorter in Michigan (compared to southern states) we recommend contacting your local asphalt contractors as soon as possible. You won’t be the only homeowner looking to sealcoat their driveway this year, which is why it’s important you call a contractor as soon as possible.
